Microsoft's president says AI is less regulated than milk, as Britain announces new defences against AI risks

Microsoft president Brad Smith said artificial intelligence is less regulated than milk and washing machines and called for tougher rules, including a legal duty to victims of rogue AI agents, the Guardian, BBC and Reuters reported. Separately GOV.UK announced a suite of measures to protect Britain from the risks of increasingly powerful AI.

When both the industry and government say rules lag behind the technology, new legislation becomes more likely. The question is who bears liability when an AI system causes harm.

Businesses using AI tools may face clearer duties; consumers may gain routes to redress if the proposals become law.

Supporters of tougher rules say safety standards are overdue.

Industry critics warn heavy rules could slow investment in Britain.
