Healey is reported to be preparing cheaper hiring of under-25s for the Budget

City AM reported that Chancellor John Healey is drawing up measures for the Budget to cut employers' cost of hiring under-25s, to tackle youth unemployment and ease pressure on businesses. In a separate City AM article, the chief executive of Kingfisher, which owns B&Q, warned that the group may withdraw support for unemployed young people if taxes rise. We found no second outlet for either claim.

Youth unemployment is a political problem, and the cost of hiring is one lever the Treasury controls.

If you are under 25 and looking for work, a cheaper hiring cost could help, but nothing is decided until the Budget.

Treat this as a briefing, not policy. Check the Budget on 28 October.
