A Saudi national is charged over a hidden recording device at OpenAI

A Saudi national who worked for OpenAI has been charged with secretly placing a recording device in one of the company's offices, the BBC, Sky News, the Guardian and Reuters reported. Reuters said the company reported it to the FBI. Der Spiegel and Zeit said the device was hidden behind a television in a meeting room in San Francisco and that the FBI is investigating. Zeit reported that he faces up to five years in prison.

AI labs hold valuable secrets, and a recorder placed in a meeting room raises questions about how far insiders can reach.

No effect on users. It adds to the argument about how AI companies guard their staff and data.

The outstanding question is motive and whether anyone else was involved. Neither the company nor the reports we saw said what was recorded.
