A container ship sinks near the Strait of Hormuz, and Aramco's headquarters is reported badly damaged

A container ship hit by a projectile sank near the Strait of Hormuz, Reuters, citing sources, reported; the BBC reported, citing Singapore, and the Guardian and CNBC reported a surge in Iranian attacks on shipping. Separately, Reuters reported, citing sources, that Saudi Aramco's headquarters suffered extensive damage in a Houthi attack, and that the Houthis vowed more attacks on Saudi airports and oil facilities. We saw no official Saudi statement of the damage. Oil prices fell in Asia on Thursday as investors weighed supply and Middle East tensions, Reuters said.

Hormuz is the sea route out of the Gulf for much of the world's oil. Attacks on ships, airports and oil facilities push up fuel and shipping costs, which feed into UK prices.

Petrol, diesel and heating prices are already high. Expect them to stay sensitive to each new attack. If you travel to the Gulf, follow Foreign Office advice.

Treat the Aramco damage as 'reported by sources' until Saudi Arabia or Aramco confirms it. Watch the price of Brent crude and any change in shipping insurance.
