Equality watchdog writes to the Greens over their 'Zionism is racism' motion
The equality watchdog has written to the Green Party to examine the effect of its 'Zionism is racism' policy, the BBC and the Evening Standard reported. The Daily Mail reported the watchdog saying the motion has left British Jews 'feeling vulnerable', and that Labour threatens to scrap local deals with the Greens; the Mail alone reported the Labour threat. The Standard ran the story three times in the day as it developed.
A regulator is asking how a party policy affects people protected by equality law. It is a rare move against a mainstream party and it keeps the row over the motion alive.
Nothing changes for voters. The letter asks questions; it does not make a ruling.
Critics of the motion say it is hostile to Jewish people and that the party must explain it.
The Greens' defenders say the motion is a political position on Israel, not hostility to Jewish people.
A letter is the start of a process. Watch the Greens' reply, and whether the watchdog says what law it is applying.
