Farage defends Reform's vetting after councillors are filmed making racist remarks

The BBC reported that Nigel Farage defended Reform UK's vetting of candidates after councillors were filmed making racist comments. The Financial Times reported that the film showed councillors and candidates making racist remarks, and ITV News said councillors were told to resign after a 'chilling' ITV investigation. The Evening Standard reported that a London councillor said the King was 'secretly Muslim', and quoted Mr Farage saying the establishment 'want us out of the picture'. The Mirror and the Standard reported that Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Reform should take immediate action against racism. The Daily Mail reported a further allegation about remarks on the King that we found in no other outlet.

The row tests how a fast-growing party vets candidates for local office, and how its leader responds. It also shows Labour and the Conservatives choosing to attack Reform directly.

If your council has a Reform councillor named in the film, expect local pressure and possible by-elections. Nothing in the reports changes any law.

Critics say the film shows a pattern, not isolated comments, and that candidate vetting is too thin.

Reform's defenders say it acts against individuals who break its rules, and that the establishment is using the story against it.

The test is what the party does to the named people, not what its leader says on camera. Watch for resignations, suspensions and a published vetting process.
