Streeting takes Britain's case for Ukraine to Washington as Zelensky orders new refinery strikes and Musk points at the US over Starlink
Defence Secretary Wes Streeting urged the US to back Ukraine on a visit to Washington, the Guardian reported, and GOV.UK published his speech to the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Mr Zelensky said Ukraine will resume strikes on Russian oil refineries, the BBC and Reuters (citing the FT) reported, and Bloomberg said he ordered them. Elon Musk suggested the US government was behind Starlink limits in Ukraine, the Guardian and the Mail reported; the Kyiv Independent cited a defence ministry source saying service has been restored. The FT reported that Washington floated unfreezing some Russian assets to restart peace talks and that European officials reject the idea. The Kremlin said Russia has restarted diesel exports after a deal with Mr Trump, Reuters reported.
Ukraine's army depends on American intelligence and on Starlink. If those are restricted, European support has to fill a gap that it cannot fill quickly, as Reuters said earlier this week. Strikes on refineries are also a bargaining move, because they hit Russian fuel exports.
No direct change for daily life. Fuel prices and the cost of the war to taxpayers depend on how long it lasts and who pays for air defence.
Mr Burnham's supporters say public backing for Ukraine and ministerial lobbying in Washington is what Kyiv needs while the US wavers.
Sceptics say words do not replace American help that has been withdrawn, and that European leaders are reluctant to criticise Mr Trump in public.
Separate the confirmed from the disputed. Confirmed: Mr Streeting's speech, Mr Zelensky's announcement and Mr Musk's remarks. Disputed: who decided the Starlink limits, and whether service has been restored. Watch for a US reply and for any move on Russian assets.
