An oil tanker carrying two million barrels is hit in the Strait of Hormuz as the IRGC issues a warning
Two outlets in the feed reported that an oil tanker carrying two million barrels was hit in the Strait of Hormuz. The headline says the IRGC, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, issued a warning. The reports reviewed do not name the vessel, its flag or its owner. They do not state who carried out the strike, or any casualties. Oil prices were reported separately: the WTI crude quote in the tape stood at 99.02 dollars, up 2.61 per cent, in a reading taken on Friday 16 October.
A fifth or more of seaborne oil passes the strait, and attacks on shipping raise insurance costs and fuel prices for importers such as Britain. Households feel it later through petrol, heating and food costs.
If you use heating oil or follow fuel prices, watch the weekly price movements rather than a single day's spike. Treat claims about who fired as unconfirmed until a government or the shipping operator names a source.
Two million barrels is a cargo large enough to move markets, and a warning attached to it is meant to. The loudest voices will say who did it before anyone has proof.
