Police take no further action against the wife of Downing Street's national security adviser over a Palestine Action post
Police said on Saturday 17 October that there will be no further action against Sarah Helm, who is married to the national security adviser Jonathan Powell. The BBC reported that she was responding to a discussion about the author Sally Rooney. The Guardian reported on Friday 16 October that she had written to back Ms Rooney's support for Palestine Action, a proscribed organisation. The Guardian said Mr Powell was under pressure over the comment. The reports reviewed do not reproduce the text of the post or give the police's reasoning. No statement from Downing Street appears in the coverage reviewed.
A police decision not to act settles the criminal question but leaves the political one, since Mr Powell's job sits at the centre of counter-terrorism policy. Anyone commenting online on a proscribed group has to work out where support ends and discussion begins, and this outcome gives little guidance on that line.
If you post about proscribed groups, read the Home Office list and the Crown Prosecution Service guidance on terrorism offences before sharing a view. When you see a headline about such a case, look for whether it reports a police decision, a charge or merely a complaint.
No further action is a finding about one post, not a licence for the next one. The harder question for Whitehall is whether the household of the adviser who polices the line can be seen to stand clear of it.
