Yvette Cooper announces £140m for urgent care and warns the NHS faces a more challenging winter than normal

Health Secretary Yvette Cooper said the NHS faces a more challenging winter than normal after a summer of heatwaves, Yahoo News UK and One News Page report. UK Fact Check reports that she announced £140m for urgent care in England. Sky News coverage says the money goes to 14 schemes, including new urgent care centres, ambulance fleets and upgrades to emergency departments. A separate report cited by UK Fact Check refers to 25 new or expanded urgent care sites. Yahoo News UK reports that she also asked NHS England for urgent plans to end corridor care for children.

Urgent care centres take some of the pressure off emergency departments, which matters most in winter when demand rises. Two different counts of the schemes show the detail of the plan is still being reported.

Check your local trust's winter plan to see whether any of the new urgent care sites are near you.

Ms Cooper's case, as Yahoo News UK reports it, is that after a heavy summer the NHS needs extra funding now.

UK Fact Check records that the number of schemes is reported differently, as 14 in one report and 25 in another.

Confirmed: the £140m figure, the warning about winter and the children's corridor care request. Not confirmed: whether the count is 14 schemes or 25 sites, which may be different things. Watch for the list of funded sites.
