Unite warns that an Apache offshore strike on Wednesday 21 October could disrupt UK fuel supplies through the Forties pipeline
Unite says more than 160 Apache offshore workers will walk out for 24 hours from 06:00 on Wednesday 21 October in a dispute over pay and backdated wages, the Guardian, STV News and Energy Live News report. The action covers seven installations across the Forties and Beryl fields, including the Forties Charlie platform. Unite says that stopping Charlie could reduce pressure enough to shut the Forties Pipeline System, which it says carries around 29% of UK oil and 30% of UK gas. Workers rejected an offer that Unite says ranged from a pay freeze to below-inflation rises. Baird Maritime reports that Apache says it will use experienced contractors and does not expect the action to affect other producers. Ineos, which owns the pipeline system, declined to speculate. Reports add that a second 24-hour strike is planned for 4 November.
The Forties system is a hub that many producers feed, so the union's argument is that a stoppage on one platform could have an effect beyond one company. Apache's reply is that its contingency plans protect other users. Both claims are untested until the walkout starts, which is why the stakes are about risk rather than a confirmed outage.
If you drive or run a fuel-dependent business, no shortage has been reported, and the Energy Live News headline about pump prices reflects wider price pressure rather than a stoppage. The date to watch is Wednesday 21 October.
Unite's view, as the Guardian and STV News report it, is that the stoppage could severely disrupt UK fuel supplies through the Forties pipeline and that workers were offered a pay freeze or below-inflation rises.
Apache's view, as Baird Maritime reports it, is that its contractors will keep production going and that other producers will not be affected, and the company has said its final offer is fair.
Confirmed: the 24-hour strike announced for Wednesday 21 October, the seven installations and the two sides' opposing claims. Not confirmed: whether the walkout will happen after the Acas talks, or any effect on the pipeline. Watch for the talks' outcome on Tuesday and for Ineos's statement.
