BBC confirms closure of BBC Three, BBC Scotland and Radio 4 Extra linear services as it seeks to save £500m

The BBC announced on 20 October that BBC Three, BBC Scotland and Radio 4 Extra will close as linear broadcast services, BBC News, the Guardian and the Evening Standard report. The aim is to save £500m. The Guardian's headline says the two television channels will shut next year, and BritBrief puts the closures in spring 2027. BBC Three and BBC Scotland continue online, with BBC Scotland remaining on iPlayer and some content on BBC One and BBC Two in Scotland, and Radio 4 Extra's programmes move to BBC Sounds, according to reports. Reporting Scotland: News at Seven will end with the linear channel, BritBrief says. Director-general Matt Brittin said the news will be hard for audiences and colleagues. BritBrief reports 100 further jobs at BBC News and 10 in Scotland, and in June the BBC said about 550 job losses were expected.

Closing the broadcast channels while keeping the programmes online moves the BBC's spending away from the schedule and towards streaming. That saves transmission and scheduling costs, but it also moves audiences, particularly older and less online viewers and listeners, to services that need an internet connection.

If you watch BBC Three or BBC Scotland, or listen to Radio 4 Extra, you will need iPlayer or BBC Sounds from spring 2027. Nothing changes immediately, and the licence fee is unaffected by the announcement.

Supporters of the plan, including the BBC's leadership in the reports, say the services must change to protect the programmes audiences value and to reach younger viewers online.

Critics, such as the audio performers quoted in the reports, say losing Radio 4 Extra in its current form will hurt performers' income and that closing the Scottish channel weakens the BBC's offer in Scotland.

Confirmed by the BBC's announcement as reported by three outlets: the three closures and the £500m aim. Not confirmed: the exact closure dates and the overall job numbers, which differ between reports. Watch for the BBC's detailed timetable and reaction from the Scottish Government and performers' unions.
