Prabowo launches 11 downstreaming projects worth US$10.2 billion, or Rp180 trillion, at Weda Bay in Central Halmahera

The package includes the first export of electric-vehicle batteries, four commercial projects and seven new industrial projects that have started construction.

President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated and began construction on 11 downstreaming projects worth about US$10.2 billion, or Rp180 trillion, at the Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) in Central Halmahera, North Maluku, on Thursday, October 8, according to CNBC Indonesia, Bisnis, detik and Liputan6. The package includes the first export of electric-vehicle batteries, four projects already in commercial operation worth about US$3.4 billion, or Rp60 trillion, and seven new industrial projects that have started construction, which IDN Times valued at US$6.8 billion. Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia and several other ministers accompanied the president.

Prabowo said realized investment in the IWIP area has passed US$20 billion, with another US$7 billion planned, without breaking down the components, according to CNBC Indonesia. He also asked businesspeople to look after the environment and water. The media spell the names of some projects differently, for example Guangqing or Guang Ching, so readers should check company names in official documents. DailyDrop has not seen an environmental impact assessment or labor figures for this package.

IHSG plunges 1.88% to 6,031.28 with Rp867 billion in foreign net sell; industrials fall the most

The Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) closed down 115.44 points, or 1.88%, at 6,031.28 on Thursday, October 8, according to Pasardana, Media Asuransi, Databoks and Kontan. The index opened at around 6,146 and moved between 6,031 and 6,179, so it closed exactly at the day’s low. A total of 497 stocks fell, 171 rose and 119 were unchanged. The industrial sector fell the most, about 2.86%, while the healthcare sector rose 0.70%.

Media Asuransi recorded trading volume of 60.11 billion shares and linked the weakness to US bond yields that have yet to come down and to the Fed minutes. DailyDrop notes that the minutes were published only after the Jakarta exchange closed, so the link is better described as market anticipation. Other Asian markets also tended to weaken that afternoon, Databoks said. The IHSG is now back around 6,000, after rising three days in a row through Tuesday.

Foreign investors recorded a net sell of Rp867.27 billion, with BBRI at Rp207.3 billion, BMRI at Rp189.9 billion and AMMN at Rp64 billion the most heavily sold, according to Kontan Pusat Data. The selling was concentrated in large banks that carry heavy weight in the index.

Fed minutes: most officials judge one more rate hike appropriate before year-end

The minutes of the Federal Reserve’s September 15–16 meeting, published on Thursday, October 8, US time, show that all participants supported a rate hike of 25 basis points in September and that most judged one more hike likely appropriate before the end of the year, according to Investinglive and Newsquawk. The minutes gave no signal on timing, and there was no clear language about a hike at the October 27–28 meeting, the cited reports said.

Officials are said to have differed in their reasoning: some wanted ‘insurance’ against inflation, while others wanted to bring inflation under control (Herald’s summary). ActionForex noted that weaker jobs and inflation data came after the meeting, so a pause in October does not automatically mean a change of direction. Long-term US bond yields are at their highest in more than two decades, with the ten-year above 5.36% according to one Herald report; the causes cited in the minutes include the rate path, resilient growth, geopolitical risks, uncertainty over bond buybacks and the scale of AI-related borrowing. For Indonesia, high dollar yields weigh on the rupiah and foreign fund flows.

Oil jumps after report of US strike options on Iran, then eases as Trump says no attack before the midterm elections

Oil prices rose sharply on Thursday, October 8, after The Atlantic reported that the White House had asked the Pentagon to prepare strike options on Iran ahead of the US midterm elections. Brent rose about 4.4% to US$104.60 according to one summary, and WTI rose 3.60% to US$91.50 according to market closing data; that summary gave WTI as US$92.19 (up 3.91%), so the figures differ between sources. A storm that shut part of US production was also cited as helping push prices up.

President Donald Trump then wrote that the US would not attack Iran before the November 3 election and said there were ‘productive talks’ with Tehran, according to Al-Monitor and oilprice.com. Prices fell from their peak but still rose on the day. On Wall Street, the S&P 500 fell 0.47% to 7,765.36, while gold rose 0.20% to US$4,157.0 (market data). Trump’s statement has not been confirmed with details of a plan; Tehran has not responded in the sources DailyDrop has seen.

Unverified — what we could not confirm

“The IHSG fell because of the Fed minutes.” The minutes were published only after the Jakarta exchange closed; Media Asuransi linked the decline to US yields and the minutes, but the timing points to anticipation, not reaction.
“The US has attacked Iran again.” The Atlantic reported only a request for options; Trump said the US would not attack before November 3 (Al-Monitor, oilprice.com).
“The entire Rp180 trillion is already realized investment.” The value covers four commercial projects (about US$3.4 billion) and seven new projects that have only just started construction (CNBC Indonesia, IDN Times).
