KPK arrests Klaten regent in sting; cash seized from a blue barrel

Regent Hamenang Wajar Ismoyo was taken to Jakarta and is now in detention. The evidence figures in circulation differ, and KPK has not detailed the whole case.

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) ran a sting operation (OTT) in Klaten, Central Java, from Thursday to Friday (Oct. 15–16). Klaten Regent Hamenang Wajar Ismoyo was among those secured and arrived at KPK’s Merah Putih Building in South Jakarta on Friday morning. Detikcom said nine people were taken to Jakarta; another report from the same outlet that day said about 20 people were involved in the operation. The gap in these figures has not been explained, and we do not conclude which is correct.

The alleged offense is project-related bribery, together with alleged manipulation of the outcome of a process. Details of the project and the party that paid have not been disclosed in the reports we checked. Republika reported on Friday night that the regent was already wearing a detention vest, which indicates that detention is under way. The legal status of the other suspects is unclear.

On the money, three figures are in circulation. Seven outlets ran headlines about a blue barrel used to store cash, with its value given as Rp1.9 billion. Antara wrote that KPK found Rp934 million in that barrel, at the home of the regent’s younger sibling. Detikcom said in the morning that the evidence was about Rp1 billion. The difference may be due to a count done in stages, but that is our conjecture, not a KPK statement.

Politically, Hamenang is a PDIP cadre. Detikcom and Google News quoted the party as saying sanctions await, without saying what form they would take. For readers, the point to note: an OTT is not a verdict. Naming suspects and proving the case in court are still a long way off, and the presumption of innocence still applies.

The same day a headline also appeared about an internal evaluation at BNPB after a KPK OTT at that agency. That comes from a single report (detikcom) and we have not confirmed it; its link to the Klaten case does not appear in the reports. What is clear: KPK is expected to give an official statement soon, usually within 1x24 hours of an arrest, in line with past practice.

IHSG under pressure after MSCI lowers Indonesia’s classification, Airlangga is puzzled

The Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) came under heavy pressure, according to several headlines. One headline (2 outlets) said the IHSG plunged to 5,185 because MSCI opened the possibility of lowering Indonesia’s market classification to Standalone Market. Another headline (3 outlets) said the IHSG opened down 8 percent, so the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) temporarily halted trading. Both figures come from headlines, not from closing data we verified, and neither is confirmed as a close. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, in a headline carried by six outlets, said he was surprised: according to him, MSCI did not mention lowering the exchange’s level when it met the government a day earlier. That statement is one-sided; we have not found MSCI’s response to the claim. Why it matters: MSCI’s classification is used by many global fund managers to decide allocations. A downgrade to Standalone Market generally causes some index funds to leave and makes shares harder for foreign investors to access. For local retail investors, what is affected is portfolio value and liquidity, not ownership of the shares themselves. The price data in our table (US indexes, WTI oil, gold) is from 17:16 UTC on Friday, that is, mid-session, so we do not show it as a close.

BMKG: forest-fire smoke has entered Jakarta, Jakarta environment agency says the haze is not from smoke

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that smoke from forest and land fires (karhutla) has entered the Jakarta area, according to headlines from four outlets. But the Jakarta Environment Agency (DLH), in a detikcom report, said the haze covering the city’s sky is not an effect of karhutla smoke. The two statements do not necessarily contradict each other: smoke can be present without being the main cause of the visible haze. We have not found a complete technical explanation from either side.

In the regions, governments are trying various methods. The South Sumatra provincial government is trialing 1.5 tons of dry ice to deal with the smoke haze, while the North Sumatra provincial government held a Weather Modification Operation (OMC) on Friday (Oct. 16) to bring rain. The Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) asked parents in affected areas to watch for respiratory problems in children (Antara). We have not found the effectiveness of dry ice measured.

Constitutional Court ruling on military courts: TNI says it will comply

The Constitutional Court (MK) granted a challenge to the Military Court Law. According to detikcom and Google News, the ruling orders that TNI soldiers who commit ordinary crimes be tried in general courts, and the lawmakers are asked to revise the rules. TNI said it will comply with the ruling. We have not found the revision deadline or the form of implementation.

On the same day, House Commission I assessed the rotation of posts between the Army chief of staff (KSAD) and the TNI Deputy Commander as part of a refresh. A link to the Constitutional Court ruling is not mentioned in the reports, so the two are best read as separate stories.

Houthi missile hits palace in Aden; Foreign Ministry urges Indonesians in Saudi Arabia to be alert

Detikcom and Google News ID reported that a Houthi missile hit the Al-Maashiq presidential palace in Aden, Yemen, on Thursday (Oct. 15), with at least five people killed. The Foreign Ministry (Kemlu) urged Indonesian citizens (WNI) in Saudi Arabia to be more vigilant after the Houthi attack in that country and not to spread photos or videos related to the attack. On the US and Iran, media reported a plan to use MOAB bombs; President Trump responded to it, but the substance of his explanation needs to be checked directly.
