Capital gains tax falls to 31% and inheritance thresholds rise

The standard rate of capital gains tax falls from 33% to 31% for disposals on or after 7 October, and the 33% rate for development land is unchanged (Irish Times, Raisin). Inheritance tax thresholds rise in all three categories, with the parent-to-child limit going from €400,000 to €420,000 (Irish Times, Irish Examiner).

Both taxes affect people who sell assets or inherit.

If you plan to sell shares or property, the lower rate applies to disposals from today.

Check the date of any sale before 7 October.
