RTÉ funding cut by €20m for 2027 as the broadcaster rejects the minister's reasons

The Irish Examiner reported that RTÉ will receive €240 million in 2027, €20 million below the €260 million expected under its €725 million three-year agreement. Patrick O'Donovan said the decision reflected a lack of progress on cutting staff numbers and that his overall funding package of €848 million left "very little scope". Kevin Bakhurst said RTÉ completely rejected the claim that reform had been slow, and that the cut would affect the five-year strategy. Cork staff worried it could jeopardise a move to One Albert Quay. These reports come from one outlet.

RTÉ is Ireland's national broadcaster and a major employer. A cut that breaks a multi-year deal raises questions about whether the State will honour such deals elsewhere.

A cut of this size could mean fewer programmes or jobs. TV licence payers may see changes in how the fee is collected.

The minister says the broadcaster has not cut costs fast enough, and that departmental funding is tight.

RTÉ says it has reformed and that the Government is going back on a deal.

Single-outlet reporting so far. The Public Accounts Committee and any change to licence enforcement are the next things to watch.
