Bakhurst calls talks with minister "constructive" but does not know if RTÉ's €20m will be restored
Kevin Bakhurst and Terence O'Rourke met Patrick O'Donovan on Thursday 8 October. Bakhurst called the talks "constructive" but said he did not know if the €20 million would be restored (Irish Examiner). A senior Government source said reforms to TV licence enforcement and collection might bridge the gap (Irish Examiner). The Public Accounts Committee will ask RTÉ and the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport to appear. The Irish Times reported analysis that RTÉ may have to cut services, programming and headcount without a resolution.
RTÉ's funding set-up was agreed in 2024 after a payments scandal. If the State changes it a year later, other public bodies may doubt multi-year deals.
Licence fee collection may change. Programmes and jobs at RTÉ are at stake.
The Government says funding is tight and that reform at RTÉ has not gone far enough.
RTÉ says it has reformed and the cut was unexpected.
The licence enforcement route would move the problem rather than solve it. Watch the PAC date and any change to the Government's wording.
