Saudi Arabia probes how air defences failed at Riyadh airport as airlines cancel flights
AP reported that Saudi authorities are investigating how their defence systems failed to stop the deadly Houthi attack on Riyadh airport. Reuters reported that airlines cancelled flights, the skies over the capital were largely empty and top oil executives were dropped from an event schedule. The Financial Times wrote that the attacks hit the crown prince's economic plans. The Irish Times reported on Sunday that Saturday's attack left 12 dead and about 300 injured, with an Irishman among the injured. The Saudi Gazette reported another ballistic missile intercepted on Monday evening, and the Straits Times reported a Houthi warning of a painful response if the US enters the war. Mint reported the airport is shut until 17 October; this is unconfirmed.
Riyadh is a hub for business, pilgrimage and oil diplomacy. Attacks that close its airport reach airlines, energy markets and Gulf investment plans.
Irish people with Gulf travel or relatives in Saudi Arabia should check the Department of Foreign Affairs travel advice and airline notices. Oil prices, and so pump prices, react to this risk.
Saudi officials point to the missiles intercepted.
Analysts ask why some got through.
Watch the airport's reopening date and whether the US is drawn in. Neither is settled.
