Nearly all courts would close if Wednesday's public service strike goes ahead, the Irish Times reports
The Irish Times reported on Monday that nearly all courts would close if strike action involving more than 300,000 workers goes ahead on Wednesday 14 October. RTÉ asked whether the strike is now inevitable. The Irish Examiner had reported on Sunday that more than 100,000 workers were expected to take part. The numbers differ and DailyDrop could not reconcile them. RTÉ reported on Sunday a minister saying the strike can be avoided, and the Examiner reported the Government will not accept preconditions from one side. A second strike day was reported for 21 October.
A strike on this scale closes courts, schools and clinics at once and tests the Government's pay offer in Budget 27.
Check school, HSE and court notices for Wednesday. Court dates may move.
Unions want pay at the top of the agenda.
The Government says the strike can be avoided if talks start without preconditions.
The two strike figures matter. Look for union and Government statements today to see which is right.
