Kremlin rejects a 60-day ceasefire as Kyiv says Russian strikes on energy sites go on; Trump defends the Russian diesel deal

Reuters reported that the Kremlin rejected Zelenskyy's idea of a 60-day ceasefire and wants an overall peace deal. AP reported Kyiv saying Russian strikes on energy facilities continued despite Trump's Sunday announcement of an energy ceasefire, and Reuters said Ukraine accused Russia of violating it as the EU adopted nearly 1,600 new sanctions listings. The BBC noted Moscow's silence. Early casualty figures for a drone strike on a Kyiv residential building differ: one dead and 11 hurt (Straits Times, carrying Reuters) against two dead and at least nine wounded (Kyiv Post). Trump defended the diesel deal after criticism from both parties (Reuters, CNBC). Reuters, citing sources, said the US hopes it can soften Moscow on peace talks, and Russia said it may export up to 3.5 million tons of diesel a month by year-end. Bloomberg and Der Spiegel reported criticism from Republicans and senators.

If the truce exists only on one side, it protects no one, and a diesel deal that helps Russia sell fuel cuts across the sanctions the EU just extended.

Fuel and gas prices in Europe depend on how far the war reaches energy sites and on what Russia can export. A real pause would ease pressure on prices; a collapse would add to it.

Supporters of the deal say it could pull Moscow towards talks.

Critics say it rewards Russia while its strikes go on.

Watch for a written text of the ceasefire. Until Moscow confirms it, treat the announcement as a claim.
