China’s exports jump 36% on AI-related shipments

Reuters said China’s September exports blew past forecasts and imports accelerated, and the FT said exports surged 36% as AI-related shipments boomed. FinancialJuice put dollar-denominated exports up 36.3% year on year against a poll of 25.5%, a trade surplus of $133.53bn against a poll of $118.1bn, and a surplus of $34.01bn with the United States. It also reported September producer prices up 5.0% year on year against a poll of 4.5%, and consumer prices up 0.9% against 1.0% expected. The customs vice minister said global uncertainties, including conflicts, cloud the full-year outlook.

China’s trade is the main sign of how the world economy and the AI build-out are moving, and a surplus this large may add to trade tensions with the US and Europe.

Irish exporters and multinationals sell into China and the US; a large Chinese surplus raises the chance of new trade measures.

Strong exports alongside weak consumer prices suggest demand abroad is doing the work. Watch for reaction in Washington and Brussels.
