Russian missiles hit a power plant in Kyiv
Zelenskyy said on Tuesday evening that Russia fired ballistic missiles at Kyiv, with the heat and power plant known as CHPP-4 the main target and hit. Reuters, the BBC and the FT carried the report, and Reuters said two people were killed and that Zelenskyy said no warning had been received; the Guardian and FT reported that Kyiv’s partners did not warn it. FinancialJuice reported more explosions overnight and the mayor saying energy facilities were damaged; that is a single-source report. Earlier on Tuesday Reuters had reported Russia hitting no energy targets in Ukraine for the first time since Trump’s announced “truce”.
Strikes on power and heat plants matter more as winter approaches, and the attack tests the energy ceasefire Trump announced on Sunday.
European gas and electricity prices depend partly on how far the war reaches energy sites, so the effect on Irish bills is indirect and delayed.
A day without strikes on energy sites does not make a ceasefire. Watch for Moscow’s response and for repair estimates in Kyiv.
