Obama receives an honorary doctorate in Belfast
RTÉ reported that Barack Obama accepted an honorary doctorate from Queen’s University Belfast. The Irish Independent reported that during the Belfast appearance he said Israel has “ceded moral ground” over the conflict in the Middle East. Only the Independent’s headline carried the remark in the items seen, so it is attributed to that paper.
The remark on Israel comes while the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia continue, and the visit puts a former US president on a Northern Ireland platform.
It is a Northern Ireland story with international reach; the quote may spark political reaction on both sides of the border.
Check the full remarks, not the headline, before judging them.
