A cargo ship sinks near Hormuz after being hit; Houthi attack leaves Aramco headquarters badly damaged, sources say
Reuters, citing sources, reported a container ship sinking near the Strait of Hormuz after being hit by a projectile. Bloomberg said a cargo ship sank in the strait after a strike set off a fire and crew were evacuated, according to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore. Neither names the vessel or who fired. Reuters separately reported officials saying Iran is shifting tactics to step up attacks on shipping before the US vote. In Saudi Arabia Reuters, citing sources, said the Houthi attack caused extensive damage at Aramco's headquarters, Bloomberg said the Houthis hit it, AP reported residents hearing explosions in Riyadh, and Reuters said the Houthis vowed more attacks on airports and oil facilities. Oil moved both ways: Bloomberg said it gained on Wednesday, Reuters said it fell early Thursday.
Hormuz carries a large share of the world's oil, and attacks on shipping or Saudi facilities can push up fuel prices everywhere.
Pump and heating-oil prices in Ireland follow crude with a delay. Gulf travel should be checked against the Department of Foreign Affairs advice.
The sinking's cause is unconfirmed. Look for the vessel's name, the owner and any claim of responsibility.
