Gardaí search premises in Waterford as a son says the fire that killed four relatives was over a €20,000 drug debt

The Irish Times and the Irish Independent reported that four members of one family, two parents and two of their children, died when their Waterford home was set alight on Tuesday morning. The Times named the parents as Phil and Kim English. RTÉ reported on Wednesday that gardaí had carried out searches in connection with the murders of the four. The Independent said the house had been targeted twice in less than a month in what it called drug-debt intimidation, and that the family were “living in fear” and had “asked to be moved”. On Wednesday night the Irish Examiner and RTÉ reported a son saying the attack was over a €20,000 debt owed by someone else; the Examiner quoted gardaí calling the inquiry “intense in nature and very active”. Hundreds attended a vigil in Birchwood, waterford-news.ie reported.

Drug-debt intimidation that ends in the deaths of children is the kind of crime the State has promised to tackle, and the reports suggest the family had warned of danger before the fire.

If you have information, gardaí ask people to come forward. Anyone in a community affected by intimidation can contact their local station or Crimestoppers.

The family's account is that the attack was over someone else's debt and that they had asked to be rehoused.

Gardaí have not publicly confirmed a motive in the reports seen, and describe the inquiry as active.

A relative's statement about motive is not a garda finding. Watch for arrests or charges, and for answers on what was done after the first attack on the house.
