Third attack this week on Riyadh airport: at least 12 dead and 300 injured; Trump weighs joining strikes on the Houthis

The Saudis blame the Houthis, who are backed by Iran. The Saudi-led coalition said it destroyed 136 military targets. Trump said he would decide quickly.

On October 10 the Houthis attacked Riyadh’s international airport for the third time this week. Saudi Arabia said, as reported by CNN, Al Jazeera and ABC/AP, that at least 12 people were killed and about 300 injured, among them Saudis, Bangladeshis and citizens of the US, Jordan, Syria, Sudan and Egypt. Al Jazeera reported that Canada and Pakistan condemned the attack, and that Pakistan reiterated its commitment to defending Saudi Arabia.

Trump said, according to NPR and the Times of Israel, that he is weighing joining the Saudi strikes on the Houthis and will decide quickly, adding that Saudi Arabia is able to defend itself. He said he would speak with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The Saudi-led coalition said it destroyed 136 military targets.

No official Israeli response to the attack was found, and DailyDrop attributes no position to Israel. The Houthis warned, according to CNN, of a long conflict. The casualty figures are Saudi Arabia’s and have not been independently verified.

16 days to the election: Maariv poll shows a 52-52 tie between the blocs, and a Channel 13 poll gives the Netanyahu bloc the lead

A poll published on October 9 and reported by the Jerusalem Post gave the coalition and the opposition 52 seats each. Gadi Eisenkot’s Yashar! leads with 21 seats, and the Likud follows with 20. Neither bloc comes close to 61. The Channel 13 poll of October 7 gave the Netanyahu bloc 55 seats, the Eisenkot bloc 50 and the Arab parties 15, as Haaretz and the Times of Israel reported.

The differences between the polls are a reminder that they are a snapshot, not a forecast: the Netanyahu bloc ranges between 52 and 55, and the Eisenkot bloc between 50 and 52. Haaretz attributed the opposition’s deficit in part to its refusal to rely on the Arab parties. The outcome at the ballot box depends on turnout and on the small parties.

US eases sanctions on Russian diesel; a day later Zaporizhzhia is attacked and dozens are killed or wounded

Trump said on October 9 that Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel to the American and global market, and the US Treasury Department reportedly issued a temporary exemption from sanctions on Russian diesel until April 2027. The next day Zaporizhzhia was attacked with guided bombs. Euromaidan Press, citing the Ukrainian emergency service, reported 17 dead, including three children, and UPI quoted Zelensky on 12 confirmed dead.

Zelensky linked the attack to the easing of sanctions, TVP World reported. Trump said, according to UPI, that it is time for Ukraine to have a new president. The death toll may change. DailyDrop notes that the link between the easing and the strike is Zelensky’s claim, not an independent finding.

Israeli strikes in Gaza City kill five, according to medical officials; IDF: the targets were armed operatives

Two Israeli strikes in Gaza City, one near the Panda mall and one in the Tuffah neighborhood, killed at least five people, medical officials said, as reported by TimesLive, Dawn and AP. The IDF said both strikes targeted armed operatives, with no further details.

According to Gaza health officials, at least 1,400 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the ceasefire, while ABC reports more than 1,480. The gap was not explained. DailyDrop has not independently verified the figures, and the identities of those killed cannot be checked on the ground.

Unverified — what we could not confirm

“Israel is responsible for the attacks on Riyadh.” An opinion piece on the Daily Kos site claimed the attack is the result of Trump and Netanyahu’s plans to widen the war. That is an opinion, not a finding; Saudi Arabia blames the Houthis and there is no evidence of Israeli involvement.
“The US has already joined the strikes in Yemen.” Trump said only that he is considering it and will decide quickly. No report of an American strike was found.
“Russia bombed Zaporizhzhia in response to the easing of sanctions.” Zelensky linked the two, but the causal connection was not independently verified.
