Physics Nobel goes to Francis Halzen, who built IceCube to catch neutrinos in Antarctic ice
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Francis Halzen, the architect of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory at the South Pole. IceCube uses a cubic kilometre of ice instrumented with sensors to catch faint flashes from neutrinos, particles that pass through almost everything. It has traced high-energy neutrinos to sources far outside our galaxy.
Neutrinos reach us from violent events that light cannot escape, so they let astronomers see places otherwise hidden.
No change in daily life; for students, a reminder that large collaborations win prizes.
The Hindu asks whether one person can claim a discovery built by hundreds. It is a fair question, and the prize rules still permit only three names.
