BJP wins the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat and holds Nandigram; TVK takes both Tamil Nadu bypolls
Ruling parties swept the by-elections (The Hindu). The BJP wrested Nagaon in Assam after seven years, and India Today says Congress was set to lose its deposit. Akhil Gogoi said Congress's Gaurav Gogoi failed completely and should resign (Hindustan Times). In West Bengal the BJP retained Nandigram with a record margin and won Rejinagar, a seat with many Muslim voters (The Hindu, Hindustan Times). In Tamil Nadu the TVK won Madurantakam and Dharapuram. Chief Minister Vijay called it a victory for the people and for political decorum; Stalin called it a temporary victory for the politics of betrayal (The Hindu, Hindustan Times).
Bypolls rarely change who governs, but they show the mood. Ruling parties usually win them, and the results arrive in the middle of the dispute over voter rolls and the CEC.
No change in policy follows. For readers in Assam, Bengal and Tamil Nadu, the results strengthen the incumbent governments.
Wins in Nagaon, Nandigram and Rejinagar show the BJP's organisation holds even in seats with many Muslim voters.
Bypolls favour the party in power in the state, so the results say little about a general election.
Watch the Congress reaction in Assam, where the loss of a deposit invites public blame within the opposition itself.
