Delhi under heavy curbs as the CJP presses ahead with today's protest against Election Commission chief Gyanesh Kumar
The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has called a protest at Jantar Mantar today demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Delhi Police denied permission, citing a breach of an earlier undertaking (The Hindu, Economic Times, Hindustan Times), and the Home Ministry asked states to stop supporters travelling to Delhi (The Hindu). Entry to 57 metro stations was restricted from 9 pm on Friday; after a Supreme Court remark the metro operator revised this to 45 stations (Hindustan Times). Hindustan Times counts 254 trains cancelled and The Hindu reports 23,000 security personnel. Mint reports an internet suspension within 4 km of Janpath and Kartavya Path from 10 pm Friday, and the Economic Times says Delhi schools moved to online classes. Founder Abhijeet Dipke called it a 'final call' and expects arrest on landing in Delhi (Hindustan Times). On Friday evening INDIA bloc MPs gave President Murmu a four-point memorandum seeking the CEC's removal (Hindustan Times).
A mass protest against the head of the body that runs India's elections, met with metro closures, train cancellations and an internet suspension, tests the line between public order and the right to protest, just as the revision of voter rolls (SIR) is under dispute in several states.
If you live or work near central Delhi, expect closed stations, diversions from 6 am and patchy internet today. Check your train before leaving home, and keep cash for essentials. Outside Delhi, nothing changes for you today.
Peaceful protest is a democratic right, and blanket closures of metro stations, trains and the internet punish ordinary commuters; the Supreme Court itself noted that not everyone has a car.
The police cite a breach of an earlier undertaking and a duty to prevent disorder in the most sensitive part of the capital, and say officers will act with restraint.
Judge the day by three facts: how many actually gather, whether anyone is arrested in large numbers, and whether any party goes to court again. The Election Commission's reply to the SIR complaints matters more over weeks than the street count does today. Until a second source confirms them, crowd and arrest figures are claims.
