Trump says Putin agreed to release Russian diesel; US issues a general licence
Trump posted on Truth Social that Russia will supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel soon and 3 million tonnes later, and that Putin agreed to release diesel into the global market (FinancialJuice, FT, Jerusalem Post). FinancialJuice reports that the US Treasury's sanctions office issued a general licence for Russian-origin diesel through 7 April 2027. Reuters earlier reported that Trump had teased a big announcement on diesel. Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev said US-Russia cooperation on energy would benefit the world. NYMEX November diesel futures settled at $4.7384 a gallon.
Diesel is the fuel that moves freight and farm machinery. More supply could ease prices, though it eases sanctions on Russia.
India buys Russian oil already. Extra supply could soften global diesel prices over time, but nothing changes at the pump today.
The size and timing are Trump's claims so far. Look for tanker bookings and an official Russian statement.
