Nifty rebounds 1.3 per cent as oil eases; rupee closes at 96.72

The Sensex and Nifty each rebounded by more than 1 per cent on Friday after two days of losses, led by IT shares as crude prices eased (The Hindu BusinessLine). The Nifty closed at 22,520.45, up about 1.3 per cent from Thursday's 22,231.80 (our calculation from exchange data). The rupee rose 16 paise to close at 96.72 against the dollar (The Hindu BusinessLine). On Friday in New York the S&P 500 rose 0.59 per cent to 7,811.54, the Nasdaq 0.64 per cent to 27,366.17 and the Dow 0.83 per cent to 51,654.95, after Thursday's falls (exchange data; Reuters and AP on the oil and telecom backdrop). WTI crude was near $91.6 and gold near $4,220 an ounce late on Friday. NSE and BSE are closed today, Saturday.

Oil and US yields drive foreign portfolio flows into India, and the rupee's level decides the cost of imports.

With the exchanges shut today, markets next move on Monday. A rupee near 96.7 keeps overseas fees and travel costly.

Monday's opening will take its cue from Friday's Wall Street gains, oil near $92 and the weekend's news from Delhi and the Gulf.
