Modi and Vijay flag off Chennai Metro Phase 2 and unveil ₹13,000 crore projects
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay flagged off the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Phase 2 and rode the train together (The Hindu, Hindustan Times). The Economic Times puts the 15-km stretch at ₹4,900 crore (about $506 million) with 11 stations, and Hindustan Times says the two unveiled projects worth ₹13,000 crore (about $1.34 billion). The DMK and AIADMK both staked a claim to the stretch (Hindustan Times, The Hindu).
Metro extensions are among the most visible infrastructure projects, and every party wants credit for them; the DMK and AIADMK claims show it.
If you use west Chennai, the new stretch adds a metro link; stations, fares and timings are in Mint's explainer.
Credit claims will continue; the useful question is how soon the remaining stretches open.
