Trump announces a Russia-Ukraine "energy ceasefire"; Zelensky says it was news to him

Trump said on Truth Social on Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed an energy ceasefire (Reuters, BBC, Bloomberg, Mint). Zelensky told Axios the declaration was news to him but that Ukraine will agree if Russia does, and said earlier that Ukraine would halt refinery strikes if Russia stops energy attacks (FinancialJuice, Reuters). He told ABC he would organise elections if Russia accepts a 60-day ceasefire (Reuters). European Commission President von der Leyen backed his call for a ceasefire (FinancialJuice). Germany backed Zelensky after Trump called for his removal (Reuters).

Attacks on refineries and power plants have pushed up fuel prices. A real pause would ease oil and diesel markets, but a unilateral announcement settles nothing.

Indian fuel prices follow global crude and diesel. A genuine ceasefire could ease pressure on the rupee and on import bills, though we do not expect an instant change at the pump.

Trump says the pause is agreed and urges both sides not to break it (Reuters, Mint).

Zelensky says any de-escalation steps must be mutual and backed by real guarantees (FinancialJuice).

Wait for Moscow's answer and the text of the arrangement. Until both sides confirm, treat it as a claim.
