Manipur toll rises to nine; one dead in Nagaland violence

The Hindu reports that the toll in the Naga-Kuki violence in Manipur has risen to nine and that the Chief Minister has called for peace. Hindustan Times says the bodies of seven victims were handed to families, and separately reports one dead, another injured and over a dozen houses razed in violence in Nagaland, citing police. The Hindu says Manipur groups called a shutdown against the state's 1949 merger with India.

Renewed killing between Naga and Kuki groups widens a conflict that began in 2023, and violence spilling toward Nagaland could draw in a second state.

No direct effect unless you travel to the North-East, where prohibitory orders and shutdowns can disrupt movement.

Official tolls and the cause of the Nagaland incident have not been confirmed by the state governments in the coverage we saw, so treat the numbers as outlets' counts.
