Friday's closes: Nifty +1.3 per cent, Wall Street higher, oil near $92; markets reopen today
The Nifty 50 closed at 22,520.45 on Friday 9 October, up 1.30 per cent; the NSE and BSE were shut at the weekend and reopen today. The USD/INR rate could not be confirmed from two sources over the weekend. On Wall Street on Friday the S&P 500 rose 0.59 per cent to 7,811.54, the Nasdaq 0.64 per cent to 27,366.17 and the Dow 0.83 per cent to 51,654.95. WTI crude closed at $91.85 (+0.39 per cent) and gold at $4,216.3 (+1.43 per cent). The Times of India looks at what the RBI's new forex rules mean (rupee relief, higher hedging costs), and Bloomberg asks how far the RBI will go to defend the rupee.
Friday's gains meet weekend news, with fresh strikes on Riyadh, a Trump announcement on an energy ceasefire and the Delhi protests, so the opening direction will show how much of that investors price in.
If you hold mutual funds or stocks, expect a volatile open. If you buy petrol or LPG or send money abroad, oil near $92 and a rupee near 97 to the dollar keep costs high.
Watch crude's first move on the ceasefire headline, the rupee against 97, and whether the RBI's dollar window for oil companies starts as reported.
