India tells China that Ladakh is "integral" after Beijing objects to 28 new place names

The foreign ministry said Ladakh is an integral and inalienable part of India and that China's denial cannot change the facts (The Hindu, NDTV, Times of India). Beijing had opposed India's move to name 28 strategic locations in Ladakh and said it never recognised the Union Territory (The Hindu, Rediff).

Place names are a way of staking a claim. Each side's statement reasserts its position without changing control of the land.

No direct effect. It adds to the long list of India-China differences.

Names and statements are cheap; watch for any change on the ground or in talks between the two sides.
