Anti-drug activist shot dead in Punjab's Mansa while streaming live on Facebook; the accused is a medical-store owner
Parvinder Singh, known as Jhota, an anti-drug activist, was shot dead in Mansa on Tuesday while confronting a medical-store owner over the sale of certain drugs (The Hindu). He was questioning the owner and recording the argument on his phone when he was shot (The Hindu). The Times of India, Moneycontrol and NDTV say the attack was caught on a Facebook live stream, and Hindustan Times reports on a video of his last moments. Mansa residents held large protests and the family refused to cremate the body (The Hindu). BJP president Nitin Nabin questioned security in Punjab and targeted the AAP government (Hindustan Times). The reports we reviewed carry no police finding on the drug-sale allegation and do not say whether the owner has been arrested.
Punjab's drug problem is a political fault line, and an activist killed in daylight, on camera, forces the state government to answer for law and order as well as for drug sales.
Nothing changes for you directly. If you live in Punjab, expect the opposition to press the issue and the state to be asked about arrests and about protection for people who report drug sales.
The opposition corners the AAP government over the killing, and the BJP says it raises doubts about security in Punjab (The Hindu, Hindustan Times).
Follow three facts: whether the accused is arrested, what the police say about the drugs the activist was questioning him over, and whether the family ends its refusal to cremate. Until then, the sale allegation should be read as the activist's own.
