Rubio to visit Mumbai and Jamnagar from 17 to 22 October, skipping Delhi
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Mumbai and Jamnagar from 17 to 22 October, The Economic Times reports, and will not stop in Delhi (The Hindu, Hindustan Times). The Hindu says the visit is for energy talks and that a Jamnagar stop is on the cards. India Today reports that External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar says trade talks between India and the US are near a landing point, and The Economic Times quotes the same line.
Jamnagar is home to Reliance's big refining complex, so the route points to energy, not only diplomacy. A trade deal would affect tariffs on Indian exports.
Exporters and importers of US goods would feel a trade deal first; nothing changes for consumers yet.
Skipping Delhi is a choice. Watch whether the trade announcement comes before, during or after the visit.
