Starlink curbs in Ukraine reopen India's satellite-internet licence debate
Reuters reports, citing a Ukrainian presidential aide, that SpaceX limited Starlink's use by Ukraine's military and disrupted missions; Mint says Ukraine complains of curbs imposed without warning, and Zelensky has urged Elon Musk to switch the service back on. In India, Sunil Mittal said he was ahead of Musk in the queue for a licence, having applied years earlier (Hindustan Times). Mint reports an RSS affiliate wants the Centre to refuse Starlink a licence, The Times of India reports a parliamentary panel chief, Nishikant Dubey, saying the government will examine satellite internet, and Bloomberg reports Musk lashing out at an Indian billionaire over the issue.
Ukraine's experience shows that a service run by a private company can be limited by that company's decisions. Indian officials are weighing that against the benefit of satellite internet in remote areas.
The reports describe a licence still under examination, so nothing changes for current users of fibre or mobile data.
We have seen no report of a licence decision. Watch the parliamentary panel's examination and any conditions the government attaches on data and control.
