Details of the IDBI Bank sale emerge: Fairfax to buy 60.72% for about ₹53,000 crore; the share falls 7%

The Union Cabinet approved on Wednesday the sale of the government's controlling stake in IDBI Bank to Fairfax Financial Holdings (The Hindu BusinessLine, Telegraph India, CNBC, Hindustan Times). Telegraph India and AajTak put the stake at 60.72%. The price is about ₹53,000 crore (BusinessLine, Telegraph India), or about $5.5 billion (CNBC), but Hindustan Times gives ₹58,000 crore in its headline and Bloomberg says nearly $6 billion; the gap is not explained. BusinessLine says Fairfax pays ₹81 a share against a fair value of ₹75.99 set by two valuers. The Economic Times says Fairfax plans to fold Digit and IIFL into the bank. IDBI shares fell 7% to 7.5% on Thursday.

Reports earlier in the week called the Cabinet's approval the largest foreign direct investment in Indian finance. The price decides how much the Centre raises, and Bloomberg notes the sale gives it some fiscal room while fuel prices rise.

For IDBI customers, BusinessLine says the restructuring does not change the bank's regulation or its customer-facing duties, citing Finance Ministry sources. Shareholders face a share price that fell on the news. Employees' terms are not in any report we saw.

Supporters say a long-term financial investor can run the bank better than the state and that the sale brings the Centre fiscal relief (Bloomberg).

Opposition parties say a public asset is being sold (Akhilesh Yadav, per AajTak). The share fell 7% after the announcement, and the reports do not say what the market is pricing.

Pin down the number first. A ₹5,000-crore gap between headlines is too large to leave open, and no report we saw explains it. After that, watch the regulatory approvals and the Digit and IIFL plan, which would turn a bank sale into a financial-group deal.
