Mumbai Police tell actor Imran Khan to leave India by 28 October after a protest against the Chief Election Commissioner

Mumbai Police have asked actor Imran Khan to leave India by 28 October, Reuters, BBC, Hindustan Times, Mint and others report. Khan was detained at a Mumbai protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on 10 October (Mint). Hindustan Times says the notice cites the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, and describes Khan as a US national; he is an Overseas Citizen of India cardholder (Mint). The action followed a complaint from BJP leader Kirit Somaiya (Hindustan Times, Mint). Mint says Khan has moved the High Court against the notice; Hindustan Times' evening brief says he will challenge it, so reports differ on whether he has yet filed.

It tests what Overseas Citizens of India may do in political protests and how far immigration law can be used against them.

OCI cardholders can read the rule explainers published by Hindustan Times and Mint; we have not seen the notice itself.

Kirit Somaiya's complaint says the actor took part in the CJP protest against the Chief Election Commissioner (Hindustan Times).

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke criticised the order, and Hindustan Times reports reactions ranging from accusations of dictatorship to approval.

The High Court filing and the 28 October deadline are the two dates that matter. Until a court hears it, the notice stands.
