Jio Platforms sets the terms for India's biggest IPO: up to ₹30,213 crore, about $3.2 billion, with bidding open from 21 October

Jio Platforms filed its final prospectus on Wednesday 14 October, with the offer opening on 21 October and closing on 23 October and anchor investors bidding on 19 October (Reuters, The Hindu BusinessLine). Reuters, CNBC and Forbes put the raise at up to $3.2 billion, and AajTak says ₹30,213 crore. Dainik Bhaskar says about 27 crore shares are on offer. Reuters and TradingView report that a price band was fixed by Wednesday night and Reuters says Reliance Industries shares rose; the band itself is not in the reports we reviewed. The Wall Street Journal and Firstpost say Jio seeks a valuation near $108 billion. The Hindu BusinessLine quotes Mukesh Ambani saying almost all proceeds will make the company net debt-free.

A listing of this size is the largest test of Indian investors' appetite for a single new share, and it will pull money from the rest of the market during the bidding days. It also shows the company's finances to the public for the first time.

If you plan to apply, read the final prospectus for the price band, lot size and risk factors before the 21 October opening. An analyst's call for a listing pop is a forecast, not a promise, and a share bought on the first day can still fall. Reuters reports that Reliance Industries shares rose after the band was set; that is one outlet.

Supporters say a debt-free Jio can fund its expansion from its own cash flow and give ordinary investors a stake in India's biggest digital business (Hindu BusinessLine, Reuters analysts).

Sceptics point to the size of the valuation and to Bloomberg's note that early foreign backers have earned modest dollar returns because of the weak rupee.

Three numbers will settle this: the price band, the subscription figure on 23 October and the first-day price. The band decides whether a $108 billion value is reasonable against Jio's earnings, and the subscription figure shows whether the reported demand is real. We would not read the Google News headline about $20 billion in bids until a named outlet gives the detail.
