Nifty closes 1.66% higher at 22,997 while Asian shares fall on hot US prices and AI-debt fears; the IEA widens its oil release
The Nifty 50 closed Thursday at 22,997.35, up 1.66%, as other Asian markets fell (The Hindu BusinessLine; market data). Reuters reports that Asia sold off as AI-linked trades crumbled after hot US consumer-price data and that the dollar eased from an 18-month high as Fed officials tempered bets on rate hikes. US producer prices posted their biggest rise in 4½ years and retail sales beat forecasts (Reuters). The Fed's Daly told Reuters that hikes are likely needed, though not urgently. Reuters said during Thursday's US session that chip stocks were on course to lose $2 trillion; we have no closing figures. The IEA agreed to speed up its oil stock release to more than 400 million barrels in total, with over 20 million barrels of diesel (Reuters, Bloomberg).
India imports most of its oil and has been defending the rupee, so US rate worries, a strong dollar and Hormuz disruption reach it quickly. A rally that defies Asia can reverse if foreign money turns cautious.
Fuel prices follow crude and the rupee with a lag. Reuters reports that bankers estimate the RBI has spent half of its $140 billion of capital inflows defending the rupee. If you invest in funds heavy in IT or AI themes, expect larger swings.
Bulls point to a stronger rupee and IT buying for Thursday's gain (BusinessLine, Moneycontrol).
Bears point to a hot US inflation reading, possible Fed hikes and an AI debt scare that has hit chip shares worldwide (Reuters, FT).
Friday's open will show whether Thursday's rally survives the US session. Watch the dollar, the Fed's tone and any new attack near Hormuz. We will not treat the intraday US numbers as closes until they are.
