Election Commission orders a Special Summary Revision of voter rolls in 14 states and three Union Territories
The Election Commission announced a Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls in 14 states and three Union Territories (The Hindu, NDTV, Times of India, Moneycontrol, Hindustan Times). Hindustan Times reports that draft rolls will be published on 12 November and that claims and objections will be accepted until 11 December, and that the annual exercise had been disrupted by the SIR. The announcement came on the day the Supreme Court issued notice to the Commission on the SIR plea. The Hindu separately reports that nine lakh names were dropped from Uttarakhand's roll and the state now has 71.59 lakh voters.
Voter lists decide who can vote. A summary revision is lighter than the SIR but it still adds and removes names.
Check your name in the draft roll after 12 November and file a claim or objection before 11 December if it is wrong.
The Commission presents it as a way to raise enrolment (NDTV).
Moneycontrol and the Times of India report the order as coming amid the SIR row, and Hindustan Times says the SIR disrupted the annual exercise.
Mark 12 November and 11 December. Watch whether the Commission's reply in the Supreme Court touches this exercise.
