India says the first tranche of its US trade deal is finalised; legal drafting is under way
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the first tranche of the India-US trade deal is finalised and legal drafting is under way (Reuters, Hindustan Times, Moneycontrol, NDTV). US ambassador Sergio Gor, at a Bloomberg forum in New Delhi, said the big items are done (Times of India, Economic Times). A Times of India headline refers to a 100% sanctions threat from Trump and an Economic Times headline to a 100% tariff risk within 10 days; the two do not use the same terms and we have not seen the underlying statement. Hindustan Times quotes Goyal saying an India-EU trade agreement will be signed in December and take effect in February or March (single outlet).
A trade text would set the tariffs Indian exporters face in their largest market.
Exporters and importers should wait for the text before planning. Prices in the shops will not change on the strength of a statement.
Officials sound confident that the deal is close.
Headlines about a 100% threat show that the risk of new US measures has not gone away.
Watch for the legal text and the date Washington confirms. Treat the EU timetable as a minister's target.
