ICICI Bank's Q2 profit rises 20% to ₹14,843 crore, beating estimates, as the Nifty closes at 23,146.15
ICICI Bank reported second-quarter net profit of ₹14,843 crore, up 20%, and net interest income up 18%. The result was above analysts' estimates, according to two outlets on Saturday, October 17. One crore is ten million, so the profit is about 148 billion rupees. The Nifty closed on Friday, October 16, at 23,146.15, up 0.65%. The rupee was at 94.96 per US dollar in the latest completed reading, down 0.09%. Separate Hindi reports said Prem Vats is buying IDBI Bank for ₹52,000 crore. The deal terms are not in the reports.
Net interest income is the gap between what a bank earns on loans and pays on deposits, so growth of 18% means the lending business itself expanded. Shareholders and bank staff feel results first, while borrowers and depositors feel any change in rates or branch priorities later.
If you hold bank shares through a mutual fund or an SIP, look at the fund's factsheet for its bank exposure before Monday's trading. Do not trade on a headline profit number alone.
A profit beat is already in the price by the time most people read it.
