About 550,000 join French protests over schools and living costs; looting and clashes follow

Al Jazeera, CBC and The National Desk reported that the nationwide protests in France on Saturday, October 17, drew about 550,000 people by the Interior Ministry's count and more than 800,000 by the organisers' count. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez put the Paris crowd at 110,000. The movement began last month in high schools in Paris' working-class northern suburbs, where students protested teacher shortages and poor facilities, and on Saturday students and trade unions were joined by supporters of the 'yellow vest' movement. Most participants were peaceful, but a small minority attacked buildings, looted shops and clashed with police, who fired tear gas. CBC reported that the prime minister said around 1,200 people were arrested and 150 police officers were injured. President Emmanuel Macron vowed to prosecute and punish those who took part in violence.

The protests started with school conditions and widened to living costs and fuel prices, so the grievances now cover far more than classrooms. The gap between 550,000 and 800,000 shows the numbers themselves are part of the political contest.

If you have travel or study plans in France this week, check local transport and police notices for the cities where the protests were held, and note that the arrest figures in the reports vary.

The government's view, as reported: most protesters were peaceful, a small minority attacked buildings and looted shops, and Macron vowed to prosecute and punish the violence.

The organisers' view, as reported: more than 800,000 people joined, well above the Interior Ministry's 550,000, with students, unions and 'yellow vest' supporters marching together over schools and living costs.

Confirmed by three outlets are the protests on October 17, the Interior Ministry's count of 550,000 and the looting and clashes. Not confirmed are the arrest total, which CBC's text and headline report differently, and the final injury count. Watch today for further protests and for prosecutions announced by the government.
