A speeding car kills eight MGNREGA workers and injures 12 on a Punjab road in Sangrur, and the driver flees

India TV, The Federal and Oneindia reported that a speeding car hit MGNREGA workers on the Lehragaga-Jakhal road in Sangrur on Sunday, October 18, killing eight and injuring 12. Hindustan Times reported that Deputy Commissioner Poonamdeep Kaur confirmed the figures. Police said the car came from the direction of Jakhal and the driver abandoned it and fled, and India TV named the driver as Pargat Singh, alias Kala. Reports said all eight dead belonged to Alisher village and that three to four of the injured were critical. Asianet News and The News Mill reported that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced ₹2 lakh for each family and free treatment. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh posted condolences on X.

All eight dead belonged to one village, so the loss falls on the families of a single community at once. The compensation of ₹2 lakh per family and free treatment cover the first costs, while the arrest of the driver, which the Chief Minister said would come soon, decides how the case moves.

If you drive on rural roads where work crews gather, slow down near workers and at village approaches. Families in Alisher village should follow the Punjab government's announcements on the ₹2 lakh and the treatment of the injured.

The Chief Minister's response, as reported, centres on relief and arrest: ₹2 lakh for each family, free treatment for the injured, and an assurance that the absconding driver will be arrested soon.

A local resident alleged that emergency services reached the spot about an hour after the accident, which points to response time as well as to the driver. The driver had not been arrested at the time of the reports.

Confirmed by several outlets are the toll of eight, the 12 injured, the location and the driver's flight. Not confirmed are the driver's arrest and the condition of the critically injured. Watch today for the arrest and for any change in the toll.
