UAE Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan meets Jaishankar in Mumbai on energy, trade and defence
The Hindu, Emirates 24|7 and Outlook India reported that UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan was received in Mumbai by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on October 19 for a visit hosted by India on October 19 and 20. Outlook India reported that the agenda includes trade, energy and regional security, and the External Affairs Ministry listed energy, trade, investment, fintech, defence and connectivity. Emirates 24|7 reported that the two ministers reviewed the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and the Comprehensive Economic Partnership. Jaishankar described the meeting as warm and productive in a post on X.
The UAE is one of India's largest trade and energy partners, and the visit comes a day before Jaishankar hosts Marco Rubio in the same city. The back-to-back meetings give India two high-level conversations about energy and West Asia in two days.
If you work in trade with the Gulf or send remittances, watch for announcements on investment and fintech cooperation, which would be the practical outcomes. Do not expect new rules from a first meeting.
The Indian view, as reported: the partnership is broad and productive and covers energy, defence and connectivity as well as trade.
The reports show no specific agreements or outcomes from the meeting, only the agenda and the ministers' general readouts, so the substance is still to be seen.
Confirmed are the October 19 meeting, the agenda areas and Jaishankar's description. Not confirmed are any agreements. Watch October 20 for any joint statement before Jaishankar's talks with Rubio.
