Jio Platforms' anchor book draws record bids of ₹2.5 lakh crore, more than 30 times the ₹8,110 crore it raised from 212 investors
Moneycontrol, The Hindu and Business Standard reported that Jio Platforms raised ₹8,110 crore from 212 anchor investors on October 19, ahead of its IPO. The Hindu reported an allotment of 7.24 crore shares at ₹1,119, the top of the ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 price band. Business Standard and The Hindu reported bids above ₹2.5 lakh crore, more than 30 times the anchor book, and described them as a record. Reuters, citing a source, said the anchor quota was nearly 30 times oversubscribed. Moneycontrol listed LIC among the investors and put the IPO at ₹30,188 crore. Public bidding opens on October 21 and closes on October 23.
Anchor investors commit before the public offer opens, so the size of the book and the price they accept are the first hard signal of institutional appetite for the issue. An allotment at the top of the band means the company did not have to discount to fill the book. The gap between ₹2.5 lakh crore of bids and ₹8,110 crore allotted shows how much demand was left unfilled.
If you are thinking of applying, the public offer is a separate process from the anchor round and opens on October 21, so read the prospectus and the ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 price band before you bid. If you hold units in a mutual fund, check its monthly disclosure for whether it took part, because the reports name LIC but do not list all 212 investors.
The bullish reading in the reports is that demand of more than 30 times the anchor book, at the top of the band, signals strong institutional appetite, and Business Standard and The Hindu both described the bids as a record.
The cautious reading is that bids are not money raised and anchor demand does not guarantee the public issue. The reports differ on the figures: the Reuters source said nearly 30 times, other outlets said more than 30 times, and earlier reports citing Bloomberg had put potential bids above $20 billion before the book closed.
Confirmed in the reports are the ₹8,110 crore raised, the 212 anchor investors, the ₹1,119 allotment price and bids above ₹2.5 lakh crore. Not confirmed are the full investor list and the exact oversubscription multiple. Watch Wednesday, October 21, for the opening of public bidding and the first subscription figures.
